Herbal Remedies for Canker Sores or Fires

Canker sores, also known as fires or postemas, are not contagious. A sore is a yellow or white-gray round lesion with a well-defined red border.

It usually measures between three and five millimeters in diameter and is located inside the lip or cheek or a few times, on the tongue.

The most painful phase lasts three to four days and disappear in about ten days. Any white spot on your mouth that lasts for more than ten days should be checked by your dentist or doctor as it may indicate a serious medical condition.

No one knows for sure what causes canker sores although it is thought to affect people who are stressed or have poor diets.

Medicinal plants for thrush or fires


The tea contains tannins, antibacterial and antiviral substances very effective to relieve the fires in the mouth. You can apply the used tea bag over the painful sore.


Myrrh is another plant that contains tannins. You can open a capsule of myrrh and put the powder directly on the fire.

Coptis groenlandica

Native Americans used this plant both to treat thrush and to treat sore throat. The properties of this plant are very similar to those of the gold seal.

Gold seal

This plant has been the favorite among American Indians to treat wounds. An effective mouthwash to relieve fires or canker sores is done using two teaspoons of dry gold seal for each cup of warm water. Soak the grass until the water cools. It is rinsed two or three times a day.

Sage also contains tannins. You can rinse with two teaspoons of dried sage in a cup of warm water. Let it soak until cool and rinse the mouth with the infusion.
